After the success of the 100 Year Water Tank Project Scouts Australia has now requested the Federal Government fund them for the installation of solar panels on every Scout Hall in Australia. If they get the funds for this project then they will become the first National Scout Organisation in the world to have Scout Halls and campsites that are self-sufficient in both water and energy.
They have a test website www.sunskool.com/school/1stbadenpowell.aspx at 1st Baden Powell Park Scout Group in Mt Eliza, Victoria, that shows all the details of collecting power consumption and carbon emission reduction data. This data is being collected via a website that has been established to monitor a similar project being undertaken in schools.

Constellation Energy Group, Inc. is developing two large solar panel systems in Anne Arundel County, at the Combined Support Complex Millersville, and Coppin State University.
Constellation Energy is currently developing two rooftop solar power in Maryland, and funded in part by grants through the Maryland Energy Administration’s Project Sunburst initiative.
Baltimore-based Constellation (NYSE: CEG) will finance the construction of the panels and hold those who sell electricity produced by each organization at a reduced price over 20 years.
The Arundel facility houses the county’s maintenance, fire and school storage departments. The 750-kilowatt solar system is expected to replace 90 percent of building energy consumption.

Around 10,000 Rural women in Indapur, Baramati and Bhor talukas in India have come forward to install a solar power generation project of 1-MW and sell the power to earn money under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.
They have registered a company named after the mother of Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, the Sharda Power Pvt. Ltd.
Mentor for the project, Baramati MP Supriya Sule, said: “Of the total project cost of Rs 14 crore, Rs 2 crore will be contributed by the women shareholders.”
According to sources, once the project gets approval, banks can sanction loan for it with low interest rates.
“The one mega watt project is awaiting final nod from the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency. The project is inspired from similar projects, managed by women, in Jharkhand,” Sule added.
She said that the site for proposed project is in Indapur taluka, spread over 5 acres. The life span of the project is 25 years.

Dominion North Carolina Power plans to buy electricity from a solar-power facility in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the construction of the 1.4-megawatt photovoltaic solar power station is expected to start by March.
Dominion Resources Inc. in Richmond, has signed a 15-year agreement with Washington-based 510nano for a planned solar power station in Northampton County. The companies declined to disclose the contract terms.
The company said the North Carolina facility would be the largest solar-powered facility added to Dominion’s electric grid. It also is planning a 4-megawatt solar facility in Halifax County, 510nano plans to start building a plant in March on 7 acres in Northampton County, N.C., about 45 miles southwest of Franklin, and have it operating by the third quarter of this year, said Valjeanne Estes, project director for 510nano.

The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) is now looking for the ways of tapping solar power energy to use in its tea factories. KTDA board member Mr Peter Kanyago said that this step is a part of the organisation’s strategy to cut the production costs.
He said on Monday during the annual general meeting at Chinga Tea factory in Othaya that “The cost of energy is one of the major challenges facing the tea industry.” KTDA has initiated a hydro-power project programme, which is going to be implemented across many other KTDA-managed factories in the country. “Plans for the construction of the Gura Hydro power generation project are at an advanced stage,” Mr Kanyago said.

Researchers from the University of Western Australia found that there are many rural communities in the Western Australia where finding enough electricity is harder. But by using CSP, Concentrated Solar Power system it will be easy to fulfil the demand of electricity.
They have the required environmental conditions of flat land, sunshine and access of water to fuel the systems. Concentrated Solar Power systems has given a hope for rural communities to attract industrial development.
Concentrated solar power (CSP) are very much different from the normal solar power system. CSP systems use lenses or mirrors to concentrate a large area of sunlight onto a small area. Electrical power is produced when the concentrated light is converted to heat which drives a steam turbine connected to an electrical power generator.

A 10 MW grid-connected power plant, Masdar City is a “positive energy.” The factory currently has more energy than it consumes.
“The solar power this [10 MW] plant generates over a 24-hour period exceeds the amount that the [Masdar] Institute and the site offices with the construction site use,” Afshin Afshari, manager of Energy Management at Masdar City, said.
This Power plant the largest in the area has been built over 22 hectares and it has been in operation since April 2009. Masdar City to use 3-4 MW, while the 6-7 MW transmitted back to the national grid in Abu Dhabi.

Looking towards the demand for electricity, ample availability in March and a strong government commitment to sustained economic growth, India can play a leading role in the production of solar energy in the Asia Pacific region, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) President of South Asia, said today.
Director General of Sultan H. Rahman said in the conference in Gujarat, India that the Indian Government’s strong support at both national and regional level, has galvanized a number of major solar power projects, which place the country at the forefront of solar energy development.
‘Economies of scale will reduce costs and Gujarat and other states in India have more solar radiation is rapidly growing electricity demand and more available in the country,’ Mr. Rahman said.

Now Solar panels will be installed on Parliament House’s roof to find long-term solutions to the building’s energy needs.
The cooling and heating systems of Parliament are gone 22 years old and required to be replaced now. Department of Parliamentary Services secretary Alan Thompson said. Also the department is looking at alternative energy sources such as wind and solar.
He estimated ”some hundreds of thousands” of dollars would be spent on the trial of solar power panels, which could help meet Parliament House’s energy needs.
”The main long-term solution is probably … something called tri-generation, which is exciting and now being used out at Canberra Airport,” he said. ”You can burn a lot more gas but you can generate a lot more electricity on site. ”And you make use of the waste to cool the building and heat the building.”

Mahagenco has decided to set up a 4MW solar power plant in Chandrapur, looking towards the progress of renewable and clean energy. The company has already granted a 1MW solar plant in the premises of the Chandrapur power plant. Mahagenco has the target of generating 125MW of power in the state by 2012.
The two technologies Crystalline photovoltaic technology and the thin film photovoltaic technology will be used to produce 2MW each will be used in the plant. The first technology requires 4 hectares land, while the second would need eight hectares. The deadline for completing the project is June 2011.
Mahagenco and MSETCL made an agreement for transmission of 61.33 lakh units that would be generated in the 4 MW solar power project here.
A loan of 75% cost of the Rs 52.52 crore will be given by Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA)and the remaining 25% will have to be borne by Mahagenco.
